How to photograph small products

Good product photography does not require a large studio. For small objects, a repeatable setup can make the result clearer: a clean subject, a neutral background, stable framing and soft light.

1. Clean the subject and the camera lens

Dust and fingerprints become obvious in close-up photos. Wipe the object and your phone or camera lens before shooting.

2. Keep the background simple

Choose one uncluttered background so the product stays readable. A light neutral background is a useful starting point.

3. Use even, soft light

Avoid mixing several strong light sources. Place the subject where the light is even, then adjust position until harsh shadows are reduced.

4. Stabilise the camera

Rest your phone or camera on a stable support, or use a timer. This helps preserve detail without increasing sharpness artificially.

5. Show the relevant angles

Photograph the front, details, scale and any important feature. Include a reference for size when it helps the buyer understand the item.

6. Check the image before publishing

Look for distracting reflections, colour casts and parts of the product that are out of focus. A quick reshoot is usually better than excessive editing.
